Travel agents' holiday insurance rates branded a 'rip off', and MPs call for FSA regulation to protect travellers. Direct-sell travel insurance firm Insure And Go have added fuel to the fire started by the recent Treasury Select Committee criticisms of policies 'bundled' with holidays bought from agents, by pointing out that, when compared to the cover sold by the top 25 per cent most competitive insurers, the average cost of insurance bought from agents for a single trip can be up to 91.8 per cent more expensive. Overall, Insure And Go found that the average cost for travel insurance within the European Union is 9.3 per cent more expensive, and worldwide coverage 23.3. per cent higher, if bought from a travel agent, rather than a direct insurer. MPs recently called for tougher rules over the insurance policies which travel agents sell 'bundled' with holiday packages, with Treasury Select Committee chairman John McFall explaining, "All too often, exclusions are buried in the small print of insurance policies. Holidaymakers are risking damage to their health or considerable financial loss if they require treatment while abroad or repatriation to the UK."
